Two newcomers, incumbent win seats on Glenbard District 87 board

One incumbent and two newcomers were elected Tuesday to three seats on the Glenbard High School District 87 board.

With all 137 precincts unofficially reporting, newcomers Margaret DeLaRosa and Martha Mueller and incumbent Mary Ozog received the most votes among a field of six candidates. DeLaRosa led with 6,578 votes, while Ozog and Mueller have 6,289 and 5,274 votes, respectively.

The other candidates were incumbent Tom Trefilek, who received 4,418 votes; LJ Spasovski, with 1,668 votes; and Brian Loftus with 4,380 votes.

Trefilek has served on the board since 2007 and has been a sports team coach in his spare time.

DeLaRosa said she was surprised by the election results.

"I'm delighted," she said. "I think I had some very worthy opponents and I think we each brought some legitimate issues, I think, throughout the campaign."

Ozog has been on the school board since 2011. She has also served on Glen Ellyn's zoning board of appeals and its architectural review commission.

Ozog said her most important goal for the next four years is the continued fiscal health of the high school district.

DeLaRosa, a business analyst, is a member of the district's finance committee, which consists of board members and residents. She previously served as the president of the League of Women Voters and the president of the Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41 PTA Council.

DeLaRosa said it's important that the school board continuously strives to maintain competitive schools.

Mueller, a district school bus driver, is a political newcomer. She said there needs to be more opportunities for elective courses for students. When it comes to budgeting, she also said she would look for places where money could be saved before cutting any programs that benefit students.
