Ruzanski, Bodganowski, Yensen winners in Lake in the Hills

Two incumbents and a former trustee won a six-way race for three seats on the Lake in the Hills village board.

With all 27 precincts reporting, unofficial results on the McHenry County Clerk's website show incumbents Russ Ruzanski and Ray Bogdanowski will retain their seats and former trustee Paula Yensen will reclaim the third.

The trio defeated Frank Covone, who was appointed to the board in 2013, and two other challengers; Tyna Zarecky and Bill Dustin.

Bogdanowski received the most votes, with 568, followed by 562 for Ruzanski and 518 for Yensen. None of the other candidates broke the 400-vote threshold, according to the clerk's website.

Ruzanski, 68, a trustee since 2011 and chairman of the village's Veterans Memorial Committee, said during the campaign he wouldn't want Lake in the Hills to become a "gambling destination." He said he would like the village to get car dealerships along Route 47 and develop the airport area more to "maximize the airport's usage."

Bogdanowski, 56, who has served on the village board since 2001 and been its budget officer since 2004, said the village ultimately needs to grow its sales tax base and fill empty storefronts.

Yensen, a trustee from 2001 to 2008 who then served on the McHenry County Board from 2008 to 2014, supports working more closely with the McHenry County Economic Development Corp. to attract diverse businesses to the Randall Road corridor.

Vote totals won't be official for another few weeks until provisional ballots are counted along with late-arriving absentee ballots.
