Warrenville voters return one city council incumbent, oust another

Warrenville voters on Tuesday ousted one incumbent from the city council and returned another.

In Ward 3, challenger Michael Hoffman defeated 10-year incumbent Daniel Leonard. Hoffman, a semiretired electrician, received 399 votes in unofficial vote tallies. Leonard, a former police officer and volunteer firefighter, received 255 votes.

In the race for Ward 4, incumbent Leah Goodman, an alderman since 2011, narrowly defeated challenger Thomas Sherlock. Goodman received 254 votes to Sherlock's 242 votes.

"It's an honor to represent my ward for another four years," said Goodman, a lifelong Warrenville resident whose family members have held public office there since 1983.

"Our biggest challenge as a municipality is dealing with possible cuts," said Goodman, who pointed out that the village could lose $650,000 as a result of Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposed budget cuts.

"Having to make severe cuts in order to address that revenue shortfall is going to be a challenge in the next term," Goodman said.

Hoffmann, who said he's been attending council meetings for the past six years, claimed he possessed "the common sense that is often lacking in many of the city's decisions."

Stuart Aschauer and Robert L. Wilson were uncontested in their first and second ward races.
