Dropping gym class an awful idea

After reading the column about Ron Sandack proposing to drop the gym class requirement in Illinois, I had to write.

As the mother of two atheletes who thrived on the PE break, I can't understand why a legislator would suggest any changes to a curriculum that allows students and teachers alike a break from the rigors of a school day. Blowing off steam in gym is a huge part of the gym requirement.

Sandack may be correct about Illinois' obesity statistics, but does he think doing away with the requirement is going to make that statistic better? And, this proposal would put even more tasks on the to-do list of school administrators who have yet another state regulation to deal with. Don't Republicans desire less government interference, not more?

Please don't tax Illinois government with moronic proposals which create far more work than solutions. This whole proposal smacks of a guy who wants his name in the papers and, like a child, he seems to think bad attention is better than no attention.
