New Trend Medical Spa grows in Vernon Hills

An interview with Dr. Ashima Mehta, owner of New Trend Medical Spa in Vernon Hills.

Q: Describe your business. What do you do?

A: I am board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. However, my main practice is New Trend Medical Spa which I started 7 years ago. New Trend Medical Spa sets the standard for physician-supervised aesthetic care. With attentive care from a great team of providers, our client's/patient's gain access to comprehensive care and services for their faces, body and skin, plus anti-aging treatments to help them look and feel younger. We use the latest technology that has demonstrated lasting results while keeping to the highest in safety standards. We specialize in body contouring, skin tightening, cellulite reduction, laser hair removal, photo facials, profractional, microlaserpeels, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, wrinkle relaxers, facial fillers and menopause management.

Q: What made you start your business?

A: There were multiple factors in my decision. I have always strove to improve my client's self-confidence over the years while practicing medicine. I noticed they were looking for ways to help stop the aging process so a big part of the reason why I opened New Trend was because I had clients who were in need of the treatments that we now offer. Another reason is the changing atmosphere in the practice of medicine. There are perpetual changes in rules and regulations, and reimbursement; hence, the practice of medicine became more challenging to maintain.

Q: What has been the most difficult obstacle in running a small business?

A: After opening New Trend Medical Spa I noticed several competitors popping up in the surrounding area. What has been challenging is maintaining core market share while continuing to attract new clientele. We are competing in a highly competitive area.

Q: What areas do you service?

A: Clients come from all the entire region to be serviced by my experienced staff. They travel from the surrounding towns of Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Mundelein, Lincolnshire, Highland Park, Green Oaks, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Gurnee, Buffalo Grove, and as far north as Wisconsin.

Q: Is this what your pictured yourself doing when you were young?

A: Yes, at a very young age my cherished dream of becoming a physician was instilled in me by my parents. In spite of some adversities I faced as a child it did not discourage my dream, in fact, it made me more determined and fueled my fire to see my dream come to fruition.

Q: What keeps you up at night?

A: I tend to sleep peacefully. When my head hits my pillow I'm always considering new and interesting ways to attract new patients in the spirit of building the business, as well as how improvements can be made by my staff and I.

Q: If you could give one tip to a rookie business owner, what would it be?

A: My advice to any new business owner would be selecting the location carefully. Also, making sure you are able to have prominent signage. I would also personally search your competition in the surrounding five-mile area. Lastly, any business owner should surround themselves with solid, dedicated employees who share in your vision.
