White Sox trim 7 off major-league roster

After wrapping up exhibition play Friday night with a 10-2 loss at Class AAA Charlotte, the White Sox all but wrapped up their 25-man roster.

The Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Erik Johnson to Charlotte and outrighted relievers Maikel Cleto and Onelki Garcia to their Triple-A farm club.

The Sox also reassigned catcher George Kottaras, pitchers Jairo Asencio and Arcenio Leon and outfielder Engel Beltre to minor-league camp.

That leaves 28 players on the major-league roster as Monday's regular season opener at Kansas City approaches.

Starter Chris Sale (foot) and reliever Jake Petricka (forearm) are expected to open the season the disabled list. Sale is on the mend and targeted to debut against the Twins on April 12 at U.S. Cellular Field.

That technically leaves one open spot on the 25-man roster, with Kyle Drabek and Eric Surkamp in contention for the final bullpen job.

Drabek, the son of former White Sox starter Doug Drabek, was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays on March 27.

The Sox will make the decision after Sunday afternoon's workout in Kansas City.

The White Sox also signed reliever Matt Lindstrom to a minor-league deal on Friday.

Lindstrom, who pitched for the Sox in 2013-14 and opened last season as the closer, was released by the Angels earlier this week.
