Portillo's Hot Dogs plans to open a restaurant in Gurnee. Mayor Kristina Kovarik confirmed last night that Portillo's Restaurant Group applied for a permit with the village. The restaurant would be in the former Applebee's location at 6447 Grand Ave., she said. "It's a big first step," she said. "We've wanted a Portillo's for a really long time." Full story.

Man accidentally shoots self at McHenry gun range

A man accidentally shot himself at a McHenry gun range yesterday afternoon, officials said. The McHenry Township Fire Protection District was called to Alpha Range, 5002 Elm St., McHenry, at 4:32 p.m. because a 56-year-old man had shot himself in the upper leg, Battalion Chief David Hardwood said. Sen. Kirk likens U.S. deal with Iran to a deal with Hitler

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is blasting a preliminary nuclear agreement between Iran, the U.S. and other world powers saying Iran will be allowed to "keep vast capabilities to make nuclear weapons." Woman who had drug charges dropped in scandal arrested again

Marleny Gutierrez, 22, of the 800 block of McHenry Road, was charged yesterday with delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park. She was one of more than 19 defendants whose arrests involved former Schaumburg undercover officers who were charged with skimming drug money, so her previous charges were dropped. Full story.
