Music notes: Smoking Popes, Face to Face play Bottom Lounge

Face to Face with the Popes

When you think of '90s skate punk, Face to Face probably isn't the first name that comes to mind. But these SoCal punk stalwarts have been playing together since 1991 just outside of the spotlight cast on some of the national acts. Join them for the second and third of their Triple Crown shows — one album a night for three nights — at the Bottom Lounge. And to sweeten the deal, toss in the area's own kings of '90s alternative, suburban natives the Smoking Popes. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, at Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake St., Chicago. $25 each night; (312) 666-6775, bottomlounge.com or ticketweb.com.

Get funky at Nellie's

Northwest suburban jam band Thinner Teed has been rocking area stages — from local venues to college bars to large-scale music festivals — with its genre-jumping blend of energetic, funky rock. They're pairing with Chicago's Chicago Funk Mafia and Afternoon Moon out of Ottawa for a night at Durty Nellie's that's sure to get you moving. 9 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $8; (847) 358-9150 or durtynellies.com.

White T's at House of Blues

Alternative rockers Plain White T's are one of suburban Chicago's success stories, with the DuPage County natives bounding from local venues and basement shows to international tours and TV appearances. While their most well-known hit is the balladesque love song “Hey There Delilah,” much of the band's catalog showcases more of its punk influences. The guys come home for a show at the House of Blues Wednesday just in time to promote the release of their newest album “American Nights,” which you can find at iTunes and amazon.com. 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at House of Blues, 329 N Dearborn St., Chicago. Tickets start at $25; livenation.com.
