Softball: Lake County roundup

Sophomore Hannah Epstein had an inside-the-park home run and double, and Alex Vikartofsky recorded her first win as head coach, as Stevenson's softball team defeated Glenbrook South 11-1 at The Dome in Rosemont on Thursday.

Junior Ruby Mankus, who missed the Patriots' season-opening quad at Barrington last Saturday due to a sprained ankle, pitched 4⅓ innings for the win. She allowed 3 hits and struck out five. The only run she allowed was unearned.

"For her first outing, she did a very good job," Vikartofsky said. "She had a really good changeup."

Sophomore Vera Pflugradt and senior Molly Thon had triples for Stevenson (1-2), while Emma Oriatti contributed a double. The Patriots stole 4 bases.

After committing several errors in its losses to Barrington and Elk Grove, Stevenson made just 2 errors.

Mundelein 5, Grayslake North 0: Nicole Parney pitched a 4-hit shutout, and Hannah Bulgart homered and doubled for the host Mustangs in their nonconference win.

Maria DeVito was 3-for-4 for Mundelein (5-2). Amanda Diaz also doubled for the Mustangs. Parney struck out four and walked three.

Kayla Switalla doubled for Grayslake North, and Rebecca Sosa was 2-for-4.

Wauconda 12, Woodstock 0: A steal of home by Anna Wisniewski, two-run home run by Brooke Sefcik, two-run triple by Taylor McCarthy, an RBI single by Sarah Ricci, RBI triple by Kayla Wedl and RBI single by Sefcik during the first inning fueled the Bulldogs' win.

Woodstock couldn't get anything going offensively against Hayley Redmann, who gave up just 1 hit, walked one and struck out seven in her 4 innings of work.

Wedl, Sefcik and McCarthy combined for 6 hits and 6 RBI. McCarthy tripled twice.

Lake Zurich 8, Hersey 0: Amanda Guercio was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, and Rachel Dawson was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 walks for the Bears in their nonconference win.

Katie Malek went the distance in the circle for the Bears, allowing 3 hits, striking out seven and walking one.
