Arbor Day Foundation recognizes Hanover Park

For the 29th straight year, Hanover Park has received a tree-hugging award.

The National Arbor Day Foundation named the village a 2014 Tree City USA. To get the distinction, towns must have in place: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

"Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Hanover Park make smart investments in urban forests," Foundation Chief Executive Matt Harris said in a news release. "Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits."

Those benefits included increased property values, energy savings and cleaner air, according to the release.
