Palatine struts to a second straight win

Palatine's softball team is walking tall.

For the second day in a row on their home field, the Pirates won on a walk-off hit, this time giving them a 5-4 victory over visiting Wauconda on Tuesday.

Nicole Pauly, who had 106 wins in four years as an all-area shortstop for the Pirates, now has 2 wins in three games as a head coach for Palatine.

Senior Erin Davis (1-1) earned the win, striking out four while Palatine's offense was led by senior Nora Walsh (2-for-4, 1 run, stolen base), freshman Maddie Craver (2-for-3, RBI, 2 runs) and junior Emily Griffin (2-for-3, 2 RBI), who produced the game-winner.

Senior Ellie Kozlowski led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right.

Walsh then bunted but the Bulldogs catcher threw Kozlowski out at second.

After a strikeout and error, Griffin came to bat with two outs and runners on second and third.

On a 1-2 count, Griffin hit a deep fly ball that landed on the right field foul line and brought Kozlowski in to score the game-winning run.

Conant 4, Cary Grove 0: Defending Mid-Suburban League champion Conant improved to 3-0 as junior Sara Neuman (1-0) fired a 4-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.

DeeDee Durr (triple) and Alissa Wachal each went 2-for-4 for the visiting Cougars, who scored twice in the third and fifth innings.

Hersey 8, St. Viator 3: Hersey evened its record at 2-2 as sophomore Kaitlyn Denten (2-2) earned the win, striking out three. Junior Kim Labahn entered in the bottom of the seventh and got the final two outs.

Top hitters for the Huskies were sophomore Katie Wingerter (2-fo-r-4), senior Cassie Zouras (2-for-4, double) and sophomore Remy Gerew (2-for-3, double).

Sophomores Jenna Breslin (2-for-3) and Grace Kaiser (2-for-4) led Viator (1-4).

Barrington 13, Jacobs 3 (6 inn.): Junior Jenna Fingerman (3-for-3, double, 2 home runs, 4 RBI, 4 runs), sophomore Carly Kordich (2-for-4), double RBI), sophomore Rachel Krzysko (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI) and senior Keenan Dolezal (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense for host Barrington (5-1), which travels to Prairie Ridge today for a 4:30 p.m. contest.

Dolezal (5-1) went all six innings, tossing 2-hitter 13 strikeouts.

Fingerman's 2 homers give her three for the season. Teammate Liz Sweeney also belted her second homer of the season.

The Fillies now have 9 homers this spring.

Crystal Lake South 11, Rolling Meadows 4: The game was tied a 4-4 when visiting Crystal Lake South scored 7 runs in the top of the sixth inning.

"I thought we bounced back after a tough game (14-2 loss at Maine West on Monday)," said Meadows coach Tony Wolanski. "We played competitively, we just had the one bad inning (top of the sixth)."

Sophomore Paige Connor had a pair of RBI for the Mustangs (1-3).

Sophomore Amanda Elkins (double), junior Meghan Slowik and senior Jordan Giachetti had the hits for Meadows, which hosts Niles North today at 4:30 p.m.

Niles North 7, Wheeling 1: Senior Lauren Hart (2-for-3) had a double and scored a run for the visiting Wildcats in their season opener in Skokie. Wildcats freshman pitcher Dakota Medrano struck out three in her varsity debut.
