214@100: Wheeling jazz band a source of immense pride

As Brian Logan prepares to wrap up his career as band director at Wheeling High School, one legacy he leaves behind is that of a thriving jazz program.

Though each part of the band program shines, jazz band has had incredible experiences. Jazz Band has won its class at Jazz in the Meadows and the North Shore Jazz Festival for the past several years. Most students who audition for IMEA make district year after year.

Looking past the awards, the jazz band has been selected to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic and tour Italy and Switzerland the following summer twice in the past six years. The students in jazz band put in hours of practicing and rehearsing on top of academics, sports and other activities, and in the end their work pays off. "Students taking ownership is a large factor of jazz band's success," Logan says.
