Barrington blasts 6 home runs

Despite the frigid temperatures, Barrington's softball bats were sizzling as the Fillies belted 6 home runs while winning both games of its own quad on Saturday.

The Fillies defeated Stevenson 10-5 and Mundelein 7-0.

Senior ace Keenan Dolezal picked up both wins to improve to 4-1 and 63-14 for her career.

Speaking of careers, by winning his 686th game, Barrington coach Perry Peterson (686-165 in 24 years) moved into fifth place among IHSA coaches for wins, passing Hall of Fame Lockport coach Barb Burk (685-201 record from 1973 to 2002).

"I thought our team did a great job offensively and defensively," said Peterson, whose team improved to 4-1. "We were motivated to hit the ball better than we did last week."

Hitting leaders for the Fillies against Stevenson were Rachel Krzysko (3-for-3), Rachel Macdonald (2-for-4, double, home run, 3 RBI) and Kelly Katis (3-for-5, double, 3 runs) and Liz Sweeney (2-for-4, home run, 2 RBI). Teammate Jenna Fingerman also belted a home run.

Dolezal struck out 11 and walked two while throwing a 4-hitter.

In the Fillies' second game against Mundelein, Dolezal had a perfect game going into the seventh inning.

A leadoff single to center by Maddie Zazas broke it up.

Dolezal finished with a 2-hitter, 13 strikeouts and no walks.

No. 3 hitter Macdonald continued her big day by going 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Nicole Chapman also homered for the Fillies.

Elk Grove splits: Hall of Fame coach Ken Grams, the second winningest coach in the state with 829 wins, began his 35th season by watching his team defeat Stevenson 14-8 after a 15-8 loss to Mundelein in the Barrington quad.

Junior Kylie Thomsen and senior Brianna Leach belted homers against Mundelein while Masnica had a double. Aleece Duffy, Shannon Taucher and Abbey Sloan each had a pair of hits in the game for the Grens.

Sophomore Sabra Morton notched the win against Stevenson.

Sarah Pauscher and Tayler Merkel each belted homers for the Grens while Anna Bonder had a double.

Sophomore Hayley Itzenthaler had 3 hits for Elk Grove while Brianna Leach, Pauscher, Merkel and Taylor Matos each had 2.

Grams used five pitchers on the day. "That was part of our game plan," Grams said. "We are trying to identify who can do what.

"We needed to learn something about our team (Saturday) after practicing for four weeks. We appreciate Barrington getting everything ready and giving us the opportunity to play outside. It worked out well for us."
