St. Viator wins second straight

Cole Kmet came up twice for St. Viator in key situations Saturday and the sophomore delivered on both times.

Two times with two outs and a runner in scoring position, he came through with huge hits to help lead St. Viator past Alabama's top-ranked Class 3A team, Hale County of Alabama, 3-2.

"I was just coming to the plate looking for pitch to drive," said Kmet, who singled in one run and doubled in another. "I was sitting back waiting for my pitch and I got it."

St. Viator (5-1) picked up its second consecutive victory on their spring trip to Lake Point, Georgia. The Lions belted Sylacauga (Ala.) 10-0 on Friday.

"The boys are playing real well," said St. Viator coach Mike Manno. "It was a great win for us on Saturday because this is the same team that beat Barrington on Friday."

Kmet doubled home Kevin Monson (who had also doubled with two outs in the fifth inning) for the eventual game-winning run.

It made a winner out of Kevin Napoleon, who came on to pitch the final three innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 3.

Fremd 9, Glenbard North 2: The Vikings (2-2) ended a modest two-game losing streak by pounding out 10 hits to get the victory.

Ian Bohn had a huge game to lead the way the Vikings with 4 hits. He had a double, triple and 3 RBI. Tom Austin also had a pair of hits to help Dan Pinderski pick up the win.

"It was nice to swing the bats well," Fremd coach Chris Piggott. "We came out with a fresh new approach out there."

Christian Liberty drops two: North Fulton defeated the Chargers 6-5 and Mercer County edged CLA 8-7 on Saturday in the Bushnell Prairie tournament.

Sophomore Aiden Miller had 3 doubles and senior Tim Laskowski had one in Game 1 for the Chargers. Miller, junior Peter Grob and junior Chris Hoffman had 1 double apiece for CLA against Mercer County.
