Long Grove needs cooperative council

The April 7 election is especially important in Long Grove.

Your vote can dramatically affect the restoration of our downtown. Progress, guided by a master plan, has stalled since the recession. However, within two years, Lake County will be reconstructing the section of Old McHenry Road in the center of town expediting traffic flow with a stoplight at the crossroad.

During construction, the village can make important improvements including connection to Lake Michigan water for all shops and restaurants, moving power lines and upgrading the streetscape to include lighting so that businesses can safely open during evening hours.

New investors are now stepping forward, willing to upgrade poorly maintained buildings.

Improvements will attract solid businesses resulting in a thriving downtown with unprecedented possibilities.

The difference between good and great depends upon who is elected right now. Six candidates are running for three spots on the village board. All six are intelligent, independent thinkers. However, not everyone works well with others. Time spent angrily pointing out problems or grandstanding with an "I have all the answers" attitude is simply counterproductive.

Our trustees need to be able to work together with county officials, existing merchants, new investors and, most importantly, with one another.

Finding innovative solutions to Long Grove's unique challenges will demand respectful debate and a determined cooperation.

I strongly endorse Charlie Wachs, Stan Razny and Steve Sintetas. They are all successful businessmen who have demonstrated the necessary enthusiasm and cooperative spirit. I have complete confidence in these three to help shepherd our village toward a prosperous future. A thriving downtown improves all of our property values.

Early voting has started. Please make time to vote, in fact, call your neighbors and offer them a ride. This election is that important.
