In this week's Retro Gallery, we take a look back at the Boy Scouts' Pinewood Derby. The Pinewood Derby began in 1953 as a way strengthen the bonds between parents and Cub Scouts who, together, design and build the cars.
“I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition," said Donald Murphy, founder of the derby, according to the Boy Scouts organization.
