Volo woman charged after bank robbery in Grayslake

A Volo woman suspected in two Northwest suburban bank robberies and an attempted robbery is in McHenry County jail facing felony charges, authorities said Thursday.

Teresa Marie Knowles, 39, of Autumn Grove Court in Volo, has been charged with felony burglary and felony unlawful possession or use of a registration plate, which authorities said was determined to have been stolen earlier Tuesday from Wisconsin. She is in jail awaiting a 9 a.m. court appearance Friday in McHenry County court.

More charges at the federal level could be coming as well for Knowles as the FBI investigates Chase bank robberies in Crystal Lake and Grayslake and an attempted bank robbery in Johnsburg.

Knowles is accused of robbing the Chase Bank at 975 E. Belvidere Road in Grayslake about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, then trying to steal from another Chase location at 2911 Commerce Drive in Johnsburg about two hours later, police said.

She also is a suspect in a Crystal Lake robbery at 11:07 a.m. Saturday, March 21, of the Chase Bank at 1185 S. Route 31, Crystal Lake Police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said.

“We are certainly considering the fact that all three cases are related,” Dziewior said Thursday.

Knowles has not been charged in connection with the Crystal Lake robbery, but Dziewior said the FBI is working on the case with the U.S. Attorney's office in Rockford.

In the Crystal Lake and Grayslake robberies, police said a woman entered the banks and showed tellers a note demanding money but did not show a weapon. In both cases, the woman left with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a vehicle described as a dark SUV.

In Johnsburg, police said the attempted robbery occurred about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when a woman walked into the bank and handed the teller a note that demanded money. The woman left the bank without taking any money and drove away, and eventually headed south on Richmond Road in a gray Nissan Quest.

McHenry police officers saw a vehicle that matched the description in the 1600 block of Richmond Road and pulled over the driver. Officers took the driver into custody and authorities announced charges against Knowles on Wednesday.
