Participate in a nineteenth-century spring day at Spring Valley

Learn how spring chores were completed in the 1880s at the Schaumburg Park District's Heritage Farm.

The Schaumburg Park District's annual Springtime on the Farm, sponsored by Davey Tree, is the season's opening event for Volkening Heritage Farm at Spring Valley, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. This year's event is set for noon to 4 p.m., April 19.

"Visitors will experience a busy spring day in 1880s Schaumburg at the event," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services at Spring Valley. "We encourage guests to stop by the barn to meet the livestock."

Participants will help with spring vegetable planting, sow oats in the fields, churn butter, re-stuff bedding with fresh straw and wash clothes in a washtub. Demonstrations include plowing with draft horses and blacksmithing. The event also includes craft activities, games and refreshments.

"In the 1880s, there were a lot of spring chores to complete to ready for the coming seasons. Visitors have a fun opportunity to see these and even contribute," said Brooks.

Admission is $4 per person and $16 per family. Children 3 years old and younger are free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
