Fire damages Elgin business

A fire early Wednesday morning caused an estimated $35,000 in damages to an Elgin business, fire officials said.

The Elgin Fire Department responded to a call at about 4:30 a.m. to Azteca Insurance at 50 Kimball St., just north of downtown Elgin, and found smoke coming from the eaves and roof of the building.

Fire crews forced their way in through the front door and found the majority of the fire near the electrical panel in the back of the building. The blaze was under control about 45 minutes later, the fire department said in a news release. No one was injured.

An Elgin police sergeant who had parked nearby notified the fire department after he heard the business' fire alarm and saw sparks and smoke coming from the property.

ComEd cut the power to the building, which was red-tagged as uninhabitable.
