Caring in Action raises funds with 'Phantom'-themed gala

Drama, intrigue and romance filled the air at the Palatine Township Senior Center's "Phantom of the Opera"-themed fundraising gala last month at The Cotillion in Palatine.

The 15th annual Caring Hearts Gala, "Phantom of the Gala: A Masquerade Ball," featured guests in black tie or costumes and masks.

Attendees entered the event by walking under a decorated arch featuring a phantom mask. Each table's centerpiece included a decorated mask and a chocolate mask donated by Morkes Chocolates that one person per table had the chance to win and take home.

A highlight of the evening for the crowd of more than 260 was the tribute to guest of honor Al Sittaro, former Palatine Township Senior Citizens Council Board chairman. Sittaro also served as treasurer during his 18 years on the PTSCC board.

Also honored was Carol Reagan, PTSCC's executive director, for her 15 years of service. She was given a standing ovation for her dedication and efforts, which has included guiding the PTSCC through two accreditations with the National Institute of Senior Centers.

The evening began with a complimentary cocktail reception with hors d'oeuvres, followed by a four-course dinner with wine, wrapped up with ice cream for dessert and complimentary bar the remainder of the evening.

Dancing to the music of the Original Rockin' Fenderskirts rounded out the evening, and guests were treated to a special performance by Music on Stage actors Anne Arza and Kevin Goss.

The gala also featured silent and live auctions, the latter led by auctioneer C. Norman Andrews. Live auction items included Cook Cork and Fork classes for up to 16 people, a WTTW behind the scenes live taping package, two sets of Chicago Blackhawks tickets, Chicago White Sox "Home Plate Club" tickets, Walt Disney Hopper passes, two sets of Chicago Cubs tickets, Chicago Bulls tickets, and a Zip Line Tour, as well as many golf packages. The silent auction featured more than 100 items, including a Weber grill and Waterford crystal.

Members of the Gala Committee included Co-Chairs Marla Shapiro-Gillen and Donelda Danz, Dr. Gloria Abularach, Kelly Anderson, Phyllis Benstein, Bob Haas, Diane Iser, John Mahler, Lauren Milani, Carol Reagan, Julie Selof, Laurie Stock, Mary Szuch, and Ann Vatch.

"We could not accomplish all we do without the help and support of many amazing people," PTSCC Board Chairwoman Karen J. Fay said. "We are especially grateful to Rem and Lee Stoke for their generous gift of $10,000 to the endowment to provide funds to support the programs and services of the PTSCC in perpetuity."

PTSCC's mission is to provide programs and services that support older adults and their families by encouraging independence, well-being and connection to the community. PTSCC is one of only five accredited senior centers in the state of Illinois, and one of 162 nationally.

PTSCC operates a multipurpose Senior Center offering social, nutrition, education, health and wellness, recreation, and support services to Palatine Township area residents and those in the surrounding communities who are 50 and older.
