Weekend shooting victims in Prospect Heights to recover

Two victims who were shot over the weekend in Prospect Heights are in stable condition and expected to recover, police said Tuesday.

Prospect Heights police discovered two victims, a 38-year-old who had been shot in the head and a 21-year-old who had been shot in the chest when they responded to a call of shots fired at about 11 p.m. on the 700 block of Piper Lane, according to a news release. Both victims were treated at the scene and taken to Lutheran General Hospital.

Police said the victims and witnesses were uncooperative throughout the investigation because of gang allegiances and previous "interactions" with the Cook County justice system.

Authorities consulted other sources during their investigation and pulled video footage from a security camera system that aided in identifying a vehicle possibly used during the shooting, according to the news release.

Prospect Heights police searched a Wheeling apartment Monday where they found a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .38 caliber hand gun.

The resident 23-year-old Daniel Uriostegui was charged with two counts of possession of firearm by a convicted felon. The recovered firearms are being given to the Northern Illinois Crime Laboratory to be compared to evidence found at the location of the shooting.

Uriostegui is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
