Budding scientists compete in Science Olympiad regionals in Des Plaines

Whisk in some engineering with the egg-in-a-spoon race, and you've got the "Scrambler."

It was one of dozens of events Saturday pitting students in the Science Olympiad regionals at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. More than 50 teams representing middle and high schools competed in the qualifier for state championships next month.

The Scrambler has students designing and buildings vehicles with CD's for wheels and a sophisticated braking system.

The trick Saturday was to stop the contraption as close and as quickly as possible before the vehicle - and an egg jetting out from the front - smashed into a barrier. Judges favored the bold teams that managed to bring the vehicle to a halt with the egg just grazing the barricade.

Nickolas Konstantinou, 16, and his teammate, Zanghia Abbey, 17, both representing Prospect High School, built a wheeled cart for the regionals contest Saturday. The trick was to brake the contraption as close to a barrier without breaking an egg. Mark Welsh/mwelsh@dailyherald.com
