Social Security wants immigrants' cash
I read with interest your article in Sunday's Herald regarding the scams associated with using fake Social Security numbers. However, you failed to paint the whole picture.
You briefly mentioned the fact that illegal immigrants are using false Social Security numbers to obtain jobs, but neglected to point out that our government is deducting from their paychecks money that they will never be able to recover when they retire. Our government wants us to believe the structure of Social Security is in jeopardy.
If someone's Social Security number is entered in the system, the names should match; it's not that complicated. The government is also collecting income taxes based on fraudulent Social Security numbers.
They could fix the problem, but why should they when they can collect millions in revenue without any backlash? The reality is our government has failed to enforce the immigration laws because illegal immigrants have become cash cows.
In this age of computers, cross referencing information should resolve any issues to pinpoint the validity of Social Security numbers.
