Bensenville police awarded Tier I Accreditation

On Tuesday, March 10, Illinois Association of Police Chiefs President, Chief Fred Hayes of Elwood presented a certificate to the village of Bensenville for achieving Tier Level I accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP). Bensenville joins only 19 other communities in the state who have achieved this prestigious honor.

"This accreditation illustrates the professionalism and utilization of best practices by our police department." said Village President Frank Soto "Providing a safe community for people to live, work, and play is a top priority for this administration and another reason why our crime rate continues to be one of the lowest in the area."

The police department was judged on the basis of 71 separate ILEAP standards regarding administration, operations, personnel, and training. The department has been revising its policies and procedures during the past year in order to meet the standards set by ILEAP. In order to complete the accreditation process, the policies and procedures must not only reflect the standards established by ILEAP, but the files that are developed must show that the department is following its own policies and procedures.

"I am proud to present the ILEAP Tier I Accreditation to the Village of Bensenville." said Illinois Association of Police Chiefs President, Chief Fred Hayes "This award signifies the Village of Bensenville as a premier law enforcement agency."

In order to achieve this recognition, two ILEAP assessors, Sergeant John Lawson of Roselle PD and Sergeant Jon Jackubowski of Channahon PD, conducted an on-site assessment of the Bensenville Police Department in September of 2014 then submitted a report to the ILEAP board for review. The community also had the opportunity to participate in the process by providing comments and observations.

"This accreditation demonstrates that the department has achieved a level of professionalism among our law enforcement peers and validates the methods in which department members provide service to the residents and general public in our community." said Bensenville Police Chief Frank Kosman "In addition to improving the agencies relationship with the community, accreditation makes the agency more accountable for its actions limiting liability and risk exposure."
