Grayslake North ties Crystal Lake South

Senior midfielder Jocelyn Rodriguez finished a loose ball for an unassisted goal in the opening half, but Grayslake North's girls soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with visiting Crystal Lake South on Thursday night.

The Gators netted the equalizer five minutes into the second half.

"Tonight we gave an effort to be proud of against a good Crystal Lake South team," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said.

Grayslake North keeper Abby Rice made 3 saves.

Maine South 3, Stevenson 2: Savannah Kruse and Rachel Blumenthal scored unassisted goals for the Patriots, who trailed 2-0 at halftime.

Stevenson coach Kevin Heffernan said starting keeper Emma Marx (5 saves) left game after the first goal with a concussion. Sophomore Hanna Petrich filled in and made 4 saves.

Heffernan noted the play of defenders Cortney Bruckman and Kyra Kirsh, midfielders Kya Suzuki, Caroline Dempsey, Emma Jaeger and Kruse, and strikers Jilly Steinbrink and Brianna Van Zanten.

"We had a slow start in the first half but a good recovery in the second half," Heffernan said. "We hit the crossbar four times in the second half. Maine South is a young and talented team. It was tough to get into a flow against them in the first half."

Buffalo Grove 2, Vernon Hills 1: Jessica Kovbach had a goal and an assist, and Georgette Topalis also scored for the Bison.

Kristen Guglielmi scored off an assist from Kaitlin Gramins for Vernon Hills in its season opener.

Evanston 1, Lakes 0: The Wildkits scored midway through the second half.

Kara Jones made 10 saves in goal for Lakes.
