Alvarez to visit Sikh center in Palatine Sunday

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez will visit the Sikh Community Center in Palatine from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 22, to discuss hate crimes, bullying, and mistaken-identity that center leaders say have plagued the Sikh community in recent years.

Sikh youth have felt the brunt of the bullying, with children tormented on school buses, the center said in a news release. Alvarez will be visiting the Sikh Gurdwara at 1280 Winnetka St. to meet with the congregation and address her office's stance on these issues as well as the commitment to prosecute perpetrators.

The event is free and open to public, but visitors are required to cover their heads, remove their shoes and not have tobacco or intoxicants.
