Smoke near Barrington Road part of forest preserve work

If you saw a plume of black smoke north of Interstate 90 near Barrington Road, officials say it's nothing to worry about.

Cook County Forest Preserve spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said the preserve was conducting a controlled burn near the Crabtree Nature Center in that area Tuesday afternoon.

The controlled burn lasted about 15 minutes and encompassed about 35 acres, she said. The preserve had to burn the foliage in that area in order to keep the marshes open for migratory birds and manage growth.

The preserve typically completes many controlled burns during the spring for various reasons including restoration.
