Dolezal, Katis help fling a win Barrington's way

After a two-year absence due to adverse weather, Barrington's Spring Fling was back in business on Monday with temperatures in the 70s.

And the host Fillies were all business, too.

Loyola recruit Keenan Dolezal struck out 11 while throwing a 2-hitter in the Fillies' 10-0 five-inning victory over Deerfield in the quarterfinals of the eight-team softball tourney.

The offensive star was junior second baseman Kelly Katis, who went 3-for-3 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI. Teammate Rachel Krzysko also doubled and drove in the final run of the game.

Picking up where she left off last postseason (after hitting .500), junior Rachel Macdonald also went 3-for-3 while classmate Liz Sweeney was 2-for-4 with 2 runs.

Fillies freshman pinch-hitter Julia Kozar singled to left in her first varsity at-bat in the fifth inning. Jenna Fingerman and Nicole Chapman also had hits for the Fillies, who scored 5 run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Barrington meets Zion-Benton in today's 4:30 p.m. semifinal while Lake Zurich faces Warren in the other also at 4:30 p.m.

Lake Zurich 2, Maine West 0: Maine West pitcher Grace Feldkamp went 2-for-3 and gave up only 1 earned run in the quarterfinal match of the Barrington Spring Fling.

"Kati Roycroft had a great defensive game for us," said Warriors first-year coach Mike McGovern, whose team will play Hersey at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the consolation semifinals.

Warren 12, Hersey 2 (6 innings): Playing at the Field of Dreams for the first time since winning the Barrington supersectional last June, the defending Class 4A state champion Blue Devils won their quarterfinal match of the Spring Fling over Hersey.

Hersey coach Molly Freeman will now send her Huskies out to play Maine West today at 4:30 in the consolation semifinals. Maine West coach Mike McGovern was Freeman's coach when she played at Illinois-Chicago after a standout career at Fremd.

Conant 17, Resurrection 4 (5 innings): Defending Mid-Suburban League champion Conant won its season opener over the visiting Bandits as sophomore Sam Gadomski earned her first varsity win with 8 strikeouts in five innings.

"It was a nice start for being outside for only the third time," said Cougars' assistant coach Kelly Wolff. "Our maintenance crew did a great job getting our field ready."

Junior catcher Dream Aaron went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI and 3 runs while first baseman Hailey Rothstein was 2-for-4 with a homer, 4 RBI and 2 runs.

"Dream had a nice day at the plate as well as Hailey," Wolff said. "Sydney Correa (freshman) went into the game and looked good (1-for-1, 1 run, 1 RBI). Overall, we liked what we saw but we also saw what we need to work on."

Other top hitters for Conant were DeeDee Durr (2-for-3), Kim Zaucha (2-for-4), Alissa Wachal (3-for-4) and Lauren Grzelak (3-for-3).

Fremd 18, Fenton 0 (5 innings): Winning pitcher Hailey Goodwin (2 innings), Julia Wacker, Nikki Kehoe and Lea Barrett combined for a 1-hitter as the Vikings won their season opener over host Fenton at Heritage Park in Wheeling.

Alyssa Garcia (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases), Reagan Schneider (3-for-4, 3 runs, 4 RBI, double, triple), Abbi Iuorio (3-for-4, double, 3 stolen bases, 2 runs) and Julie Josten (2-for-3, 3 runs, triple, stolen base, 2 RBI) led the Vikings' offense.
