Vandy hires former NFL linebacker for player development

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vanderbilt has hired former Houston Oilers linebacker Al Smith as its director of player development.

Smith played for the NFL's Houston Oilers between 1987 and 1996 before moving on to several administrative roles with the renamed Tennessee Titans. Smith was director of player development from 1998-2000, director of player development/pro personnel from 2000-03 and director of pro scouting from 2003-07.

For the last five years, Smith was the Tennessee chapter president of the NFL Alumni Association.

Smith's job at Vanderbilt will involve mentoring football players, serving as a liaison for academic support, overseeing the team's summer internship program and assisting newly signed recruits in their transition to college life. He also will be a team liaison to NFL personnel and parents of active Vanderbilt players.
