Downers Grove physician pleads guilty to child porn

A 68-year-old Downers Grove physician, Edward J. McMenamin, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of child pornography and faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said the case against McMenamin, of the 4200 block of Saratoga, began in late 2013 when Downers Grove police received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about the possible dissemination and possession of child pornography in the village.

The investigation led authorities to McMenamin who was found in possession of numerous images and videos of child pornography, Berlin said in a statement. The physician was taken into custody outside his home on May 29, 2014. He has been out on bail since his arrest after posting 10 percent of his $500,000 bond.

“Child pornographers such as Mr. McMenamin attempt to justify their disgusting behavior claiming possession of child pornography is a victimless crime,” Berlin said in a statement. “The truth is, every image and every video that Mr. McMenamin had in his possession represents an innocent victim of child pornography. These young victims have had their innocence stolen from them just to satisfy the revolting desires of sexual deviants.”

McMenamin's sentencing is scheduled for May 11.
