IOC expects UCI to take 'further measures' on doping

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - The IOC expects cycling's governing body to take further measures to combat doping following a report into the sport's past record of cheating.

Ugur Erdener, head of the IOC medical commission, says the Olympic body welcomes "the UCI's commitment to tackling past abuses and putting in place future processes."

Erdener cites "the determination of the UCI to stop doping in sport and appreciates the many steps they have already taken in the recent past."

The report by an independent panel detailed the widespread doping that plagued cycling and accused former UCI leaders Hein Verbruggen and Pat McQuaid of a string of failings.

Verbruggen was an International Olympic member as UCI president, and is now an honorary IOC member. The IOC did not reply to questions over whether Verbruggen's honorary membership would be reviewed.

Erdener says "we trust that the UCI under the presidency of Brian Cookson will take even further measures as recommended by the report" and "we fully support the UCI in this respect."
