Bobcat spotted near Wauconda

Lake County Forest Preserve officials said Sunday there has been a rare sighting of a bobcat in the Wauconda area. Jim Anderson, forest preserve director of natural resources, said officials have reviewed photos taken by a local resident who spotted the cat last Friday. "It's got all the characteristics," he said. "We're almost certain it's a bobcat." In 1999, bobcats were removed from Illinois' list of state threatened species after studies confirmed their growing numbers.

Suburban schools win big at show choir competition

Waubonsie Valley High School won the top title and suburban soloists took home three of the four individual prizes at the 22nd annual Chicagoland Showcase show choir competition over the weekend at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. The competition featured more than 30 choirs from across the Midwest. "It came down to points and half-points," Hersey choir director Sara Michael said of the judges' scores. "The performers had to leave it all on the stage. You have to when it is that tight." Full story.

Elgin frying pan murder suspect sent for more treatment

An Elgin woman accused of beating her boyfriend to death with a frying pan in August 2012 has been found unfit to stand trial for a second time. Nora Leach-Peterson, 37, formerly of the 100 block of State Street, was moved last week from the Kane County jail to the Elgin Mental Health Center for treatment, officials said. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed with an evaluation in January she was unfit to stand trial for the murder of Michael N. Mielczarek, 55. Full story.

LEGO fans piece together a good time in Geneva

The Northern Illinois LEGO Train Club stopped at the Geneva Public Library this weekend with an estimated 1 million pieces and entertained a constant crowd of visitors with plenty of dioramas and landscapes. "The show is as much for us as anyone else," said member Roger Snow of Batavia. "Because our displays are stored in boxes most of the time we don't get to see it as much as we like." Full story.

Turnovers too much for Bulls to overcome

Spurs guard Tony Parker piled up a season-high 32 points as San Antonio rolled past the Bulls 116-105 at the AT&T Center. The short-handed Bulls (39-25) coughed up 22 turnovers, which helped create 35 fastbreak points for the Spurs. "If you turn the ball over 22 times against a very good team like they are, I don't think there's a way you can win it," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said after the game. Read Mike McGraw's take here.

Hawks can't generate any offense

The Blackhawks dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to New York when the Rangers' Derick Brassard scored 32 seconds into extra time. This was the seventh time the Hawks have been shut out this season and the fifth time over the last 27 games. Read John Dietz's take here.
