Woodstock baby dies after hit by SUV in San Diego

A 7-month-old infant from Woodstock has died from injuries she suffered when a vehicle struck the baby and her father in San Diego this week, authorities say.

Juniper Aavang's father was pushing her in a stroller in a marked crosswalk on Canon Street Monday morning, according to the San Diego medical examiner's office.

The driver of a vehicle traveling north on Catalina Boulevard made a slight right onto Canon Street and did not see the father and daughter because of an unidentified "vision obstruction" on the side of the road, the medical examiner said in a news release.

Witnesses called 9-1-1, and paramedics took the baby to Rady Children's Hospital, also in San Diego, where she was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Juniper's condition worsened, and on Tuesday night, the infant died. The medical examiner ruled that she died from trauma to her head and torso.

San Diego news outlets reported that an SUV struck Juniper and her father, who was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, but her mother, who was walking ahead, was not hurt. A hospital spokeswoman could not be reached.

San Diego police, who are investigating the crash, did not return messages Saturday night.
