Mt. Prospect girl meets her German stem cell donor

Eight-year-old leukemia survivor Sabrina Chahir got to meet the 30-year-old German citizen to whom she owes her life. During a meeting last night at a Schaumburg restaurant, Sabrina got to thank Maximilian Eule, who donated stem cells that led to her being cancer-free today. "It was, for me, an awesome feeling," Eule said of the news that he was a match for someone in America. Full story.

Rolling Meadows fire victim died from injuries in fall

Kenneth VanSickle, the 55-year-old man who jumped from the third floor of a burning condo complex in Rolling Meadows Wednesday night, died as a result of the multiple injuries he suffered in the fall, the Cook County medical examiner's office said yesterday. Officials say it may be another day or so before residents of the building on the 5200 block of Carriageway Drive are allowed back in to gather their belongings. It could be next week before a cause of the blaze is known, authorities said. Full story.

Pedestrian killed by train near Round Lake

A person was struck and killed by an outbound Metra train Thursday night between the Round Lake and Long Lake stations, authorities said. The unidentified victim was struck just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Fairfield Road and Long Lake Road, which runs parallel to the Milwaukee District North Line tracks. Full story.

Witness describes stabbing death of Naperville teacher

A friend of a Naperville teacher testified yesterday that she saw him beaten to death at a bar in 2012. "The defendant turned around and pounced at Shaun (Wild). It was very aggressive and with a lot of force," Samantha Doti told jurors. "After he pounced on Shaun, he was just over him, and it appeared he was shaking Shaun ... two or three times." The trial of Daniel Olaska, charged with first-degree murder in Wild's death, continues this week. Full story.

Defense suggests Geneva death was accident, not murder

A defense attorney for Shadwick King of Geneva, who is on trial for his wife's death, asked Thursday whether Kathleen King could have been drunk before her body was discovered along railroad tracks in July 2014. Prosecutors contend Shadwick King murdered his wife out of jealousy when he discovered she was having an emotional affair with a man she met while at military reserve training. Full story.
