ECC celebrates Women's History Month

Elgin Community College will hold a series of events and activities throughout March during its monthlong celebration of Women's History Month. All events are free and open to the public, unless noted, and will be held at ECC's Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.

Women's History Month is presented by the Women's History Month Committee, African American Women's Subcommittee, Student Life Department, Global and International Studies Taskforce, and the Organization of Latin American Students.

Here is a list of upcoming events during the Women's History Month celebration:

The sixth annual Wise Latina Brunch at 8 a.m. Monday, March 9, in Building E Dining Room. Honor the courage, character and commitment of strong Latina women who have paved the way for us today. Be inspired to achieve great things in our future. Attendees must RSVP and pay in advance. $10 for students, $12 for non-students. RSVP to OLAS President Alina Ayala at alina.ayala@yahoo.com no later than 4 p.m. Monday, March 2.

Join in "Generation FF (First Generation of Female Immigrants): Challenges, Hopes, Perspectives" from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in Building B Community Room, Room B181. This roundtable gathers women immigrants from ECC and the community to tell their stories of coming to the United States, struggles they faces, and hopes that helped them to endure.

Enjoy "Soup N' Stories featuring Evolution of a Black Girl" at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, in Building G Spartan Auditorium. Warm up with a cup of hot soup as Morgan McCoy portrays 12 different inspirational characters to share their rich history, stories of love and moments of sorrow.

The Women's History Month Inspiring Tea will feature Kyla Lacy from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in Building B Community Room, Room B181. Guest speaker Kyla Lacey, spoken word artist, will be performing on her real life experiences of triumph and tragedy.

Have you been inspired lately by a student, faculty, administrator or staff person at ECC? If so, nominate her as an Inspiring Woman and join them for tea, treats and lively conversation at this Women's History Month event. Nomination forms are available in the Student Life Office, room B173. Forms are due by Wednesday, March 18.
