Niles North forfeits victory over Zion-Benton

The IHSA announced Thursday that Niles North's boys basketball team has forfeited its 73-68 win over Zion-Benton in the Class 4A Stevenson regional semifinals Wednesday night.

That means top-seeded Stevenson will host No. 9 Zion-Benton in today's 7 p.m. regional final. Stevenson defeated Zion-Benton 81-56 and 87-64 during the regular season.

The IHSA announced that Niles North, which was the No. 8 seed, self-reported a residency violation.

"We commend Niles North for its response to this situation," IHSA associate executive director Kurt Gibson said in a statement. "The IHSA relies on self-governance by our membership, a model that can only work when a school has the integrity to uphold the rules. Niles North made the difficult but correct decision to forfeit the regional semifinal after discovering this violation."
