The massive blaze started just after 8 p.m. and took equipment and firefighters from numerous other communities hours to bring it under control. Willie Hayes drank excessively and barely remembers the evening he got stabbed and his friend died, he said. A Kane County Board committee gave preliminary approval to a plan cutting $1.54 million from the sheriff's budget — a road map necessary, member say, after Sheriff Don Kramer cut a contract with the U.S. Marshals to house federal inmates that was expected to bring in $2.5 million for the county. Roselle parolee arrested on charges of selling heroin

A Roselle man on parole for a 2009 burglary conviction faces new charges that he delivered heroin to undercover police officers five separate times in February. A Cook County judge yesterday ordered Paul Ramos, 27, held on bail totaling $250,000 for delivery of a controlled substance charges. Full story.

Schaumburg man charged with selling meth

A 22-year-old Schaumburg man was ordered held on $90,000 bail yesterday on charges he sold methamphetamine to undercover Illinois State Police officers multiple times, Cook County prosecutors said. Prosecutors say members of the North Central Narcotics Task Force purchased the drug from Ruben Rodriguez in amounts ranging from 1.1 grams to 7.7 grams on Jan. 19, Feb. 4 and March 3. Full story.

N. Chicago-based AbbVie to buy Pharmacyclics for $21B

AbbVie Inc. agreed to buy Pharmacyclics Inc. in a $21 billion deal after beating out Johnson & Johnson for control of a blockbuster blood cancer therapy that will help it expand in the lucrative area of oncology. Under the terms of the transaction, AbbVie will pay $261.25 per share comprised of a mix of cash and AbbVie equity, the two companies said in a statement last night.

Fowler ready to be Cubs' leading man

Dexter Fowler is glad to be back in the National League after a year in Houston and looking forward to being back in the leadoff spot on a regular basis.
