Chicago treasurer shares plan to improve financial literacy

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's city treasurer has spoken at the White House about a new plan to improve residents' financial literacy.

Treasurer Kurt Summers on Tuesday attended a meeting of the President's Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans.

Summers discussed his plan to coordinate citywide financial education efforts. It includes working with Chicago Public Schools to train teachers on how to integrate financial education into the classroom.

Chicago libraries also will be involved, providing workshops and online resources. Those programs will be targeted in neighborhoods with large populations of people who don't have bank accounts or don't typically use banks.

Other resources will focus on helping residents pull credit reports, manage their finances and prepare their taxes.

Summers says coordinating resources can help residents pursue "a brighter financial future."
