Des Plaines Citizen's Police Academy enrollment under way

Enrollment is now under way for the annual 10-week Des Plaines Citizen's Police Academy, where residents can learn about what it's like to be a police officer.

The free sessions will be held every Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning March 24 and continuing until May 26, at the Des Plaines Police Department, 1418 Miner St.

Participants will be able to experience scenarios designed to replicate real-life events in a police officer's day such as traffic stops. They'll also experience handgun and firearm safety training, and meet the department's police negotiators.

Some 200 people have participated in the academy to date.

To enroll, call (847) 391-5408 or (847) 391-5410.
