International student scholarship honors CLC adviser

A new scholarship for international students attending the College of Lake County has been established to honor Susan Smith, a former CLC international student adviser who died Oct. 2, 2014, in Grayslake.

CLC's Center for International Education established the Susan Smith International Student Scholarship with the CLC Foundation. In addition, Smith's family and friends set up a YouCaring website at www.youcaring.com/memorial-fundraiser/in-memory-of-susan-smith/250505. Money raised online will be shared between CLC and Elgin Community College, where Smith worked from 1990-2006 prior to her employment at CLC from 2006-14. CLC's first scholarship awards will be made this spring by the CLC Foundation.

"Susan was a very dedicated and committed international student adviser within the Center for International Education," said Karen Hlavin, CLC associate vice president of student development. "She was a passionate supporter of international student exchange and always advocated for additional scholarship opportunities for international students. She treated our international students like family, and in return, the students loved her like a trusted aunt. In fact, our international students held a special balloon send-off in Susan's honor and raised $200 specifically for the scholarship."

During the fall 2014 semester, CLC enrolled 132 international students from 46 countries. International students enroll in CLC's award-winning English Language Instruction classes and credit courses to prepare them to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The College of Lake County Foundation raises money to fund scholarships and grants that provide CLC students an opportunity for a better future. Through these efforts, the Foundation strengthens the vitality and well-being of the diverse communities served by the college.
