DCFS bill would improve investigator training

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Training at Illinois' child protective services department would be revamped for the first time in its history under legislation headed to the Senate floor.

The legislation is sponsored by Sen. Dan Kotowski. The Park Ridge Democrat says the measure outlines new training for Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigators and others who handle neglected children.

Advocates say the addition of simulations based on real world cases will better prepare investigators in a department that has faced allegations of dangerously inadequate care. It would be the first time a major training update has been done since DCFS was established in 1964.

The measure passed the Senate Human Services Committee on Tuesday.

Funding is expected to be covered with the department's current $14 million training budget and federal grant money.
