During that time I've been involved in the community in various ways. I've attended board and committee meetings for a number of years, I've served on the Planning and Zoning Commission since 2009 and I've worked on the 75th Anniversary Committee for Round Lake Beach. My family takes pride and ownership for the Round Lake Beach community. We go on "garbage walks" picking up debris, frequent local business establishments and take part in community events. My children and I contributed to the "My Round Lake Beach" video, which is available on the website. Round Lake Beach is a growing, vibrant community with strong roots. I hope to be a contributor to its successful future. What is your opinion of your community's present level of local sales and property taxes? Is the tax just right, too low or too high? Explain.Round Lake Beach is a fiscally responsible community. The taxes have been kept to a minimum while maintaining residents' service expectations and a balanced budget.Rate the efficiency of your town's police and fire coverage. Are the departments well prepared for the next decade? What, if anything, should be changed? Do you have specific public safety concerns?I can only answer for the police department of Round Lake Beach. The fire department is a different taxing body. The police department for Round Lake Beach is excellent! Public safety is high priority. The department is highly visible and proactive. This provides the residents with an increased comfort level and encourages respect for the police officers.Where, if anywhere, could the current budget be trimmed, and conversely, are there areas the budget does not give enough money to?While I understand that finances are important to all residents, I'm in the process of learning the details of the budget and cannot comment further at this time. What's one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?Economic development is key. A hotel in town would be fantastic! Although there isn't much industry, it would be nice to have a place for people to stay coming in from out of town. That could be just relatives of residents or people doing business. I've noticed from the Planning and Zoning Commission that people travel from quite a distance to attend the meetings. It would be nice if they could stay the night in the town they are doing business in, rather than heading to another municipality for the evening. In fact, there is a parcel of land available for development on HWY 83 that would fit the bill. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I would like to keep green space open and develop it for recreational uses. I am an advocate for animal welfare. I encourage all residents to take pride and ownership in their citizenship in Round Lake Beach, make their homes nicer and their neighborhoods more attractive. Thus, inspiring a cohesive community. For the betterment of Round Lake Beach: take responsibility and get involved. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Mark KirkWhat's the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Take good care of yourself and things that are important. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I would spend more time exploring the world and learning about other cultures. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Psychology. It helped me both in my career and at home, specifically brain development. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Never stop learning, never give up on your dreams and support each other.
