U.S. Paralympians lead Vernon Hills track clinic

United States Paralympians Amanda McGrory and Amie Stanton Day shared training tips and techniques with young track athletes Sunday at a clinic in Vernon Hills hosted by the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association.

The event at the Vernon Hills High School drew both ambulatory runners and wheelchair athletes of all skill levels.

“We are doing a track clinic to try and bring in new and experienced athletes to know more about the sport,” said Day, a Warren High School graduate. “I'm basically bringing them in today and going to be showing them how they can do some workouts at home when we are not with them on Saturdays.”

The GLASA clinic included videotaping and gait analysis, pushing and stroke technique, ambulatory workouts and cross training.

“I think it's good and I think it will be helpful,” Jennifer Starzec, 17, of Grayslake said after racing in her racing wheelchair. “I did a lot of running before my injury and stuff. I liked track and cross-country a lot.”
