Butler picked as new Illinois lawmaker

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A staffer for a U.S. Congressman from Illinois has been chosen to replace a state lawmaker who resigned from the General Assembly earlier this month.

Tim Butler of Springfield will fill the seat left vacant after former state Rep. Rich Brauer of Petersburg accepted a job with Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration.

A committee made up of central Illinois Republican selected Butler Saturday in Springfield from a list of 13 applicants.

A news release Saturday called Butler a "strong, compassionate voice" for the state. He will be sworn in this week.

Butler has worked as district chief of staff for Republican Congressman Rodney Davis.

Brauer was appointed to assistant secretary at the Illinois Department of Transportation. He has served in the Illinois House for 12 years.
