St. Charles police officer to take the plunge for charity

St. Charles Police Officer Adam Stander will brave the freezing temperatures of Lake Michigan Saturday, March 7 for the Lake Bluff Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

This is the fifth year Officer Stander has taken part in this fundraising effort. The event, held at Sunset Beach in Lake Bluff, is one of about 20 held throughout the state to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

Officer Stander is motivated by the athletes: "Seeing the athletes there and knowing they get up every day thinking about their sport and competing, that keeps me coming back each year. Without the funds these events raise, the athletes wouldn't have these opportunities."

In the last six years through various fundraising events, the St. Charles Police Department has raised $120,000 for Special Olympics. St. Charles has been ranked among the Top 15 fundraising agencies statewide 4 out of the last 5 years. It's all thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our citizens, local businesses, and the hard work of our volunteers.

Officer Stander has this to say to encourage others to participate in the Polar Plunge: "It's not as cold as you think." Just ignore the giant chunks of ice.

Every "plunger" has their own page through the Special Olympics website that offers information about them and their fundraising totals. You can visit Officer Stander's page at www.soill.org. For more information about the Polar Plunge, visit the Special Olympics page at www.soill.org.
