Lake County 4-H holds International Festival

The annual Lake County 4-H International Festival was held recently at the Lake County Fairground. The event was attended by 350 4-H members, parents, leaders, family and community members.

Attendees brought in donations of canned goods and nonperishable food items and 25 boxes of goods were donated to a local food pantry.

Event participants were invited to figuratively travel to the different countries by visiting various booths, earning stamps for a passport each time they answered a trivia question correctly for a country.

Ten 4-H clubs in Lake County participated, sharing research, crafts, artifacts and activities centered on Guatemala, Costa Rica, India, Japan, the Bahamas, Egypt, Canada, Norway, Curacao and Bolivia.

"International Night is a great experience for both 4-H youth and our community," 4-H program coordinator Sabrina Huley said. "Through the 4-H Passport to the World project, youth not only learn about another country and its cultures, but they gain skills in presenting that information both visually and verbally to the community."

The 4-H club members spend months studying a specific country and then create a booth displaying the geographical and cultural aspects of the nation. Some also prepare craft stations, songs and skits or food to reflect their study country.

"These hands-on activities nurture a love of learning, as well as encourage youth to become good local and global citizens," Cindy Sarkady, 4-H educator Lake/McHenry County, said. "International Night is just one of several 4-H opportunities that help youth gain an understanding of the world around them."
