Possible state budget cuts prompt village to freeze hiring

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago community is holding off on hiring new employees because of Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposal to cut state money to local governments.

The (Joliet) Herald-News reports (http://bit.ly/18iwDle ) the village of Plainfield will wait to fill vacant positions until there's a clearer picture from Illinois lawmakers about next year's state budget.

Last week Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed cutting in half the amount of tax revenue the state directs to local governments. In Plainfield, that could mean a loss of $1.8 million.

That means the village won't be filling two police officer positions or a vacancy for a full-time development and planning employee.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy says the village's $47.9 million budget can be adjusted to accommodate any changes coming out of the Illinois Legislature.
