Police chief of small Illinois city accused of misconduct

ORIENT, Ill. (AP) - The police chief of a small southern Illinois city has been arrested on charges of intimidation and official misconduct.

The Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/1JHUqM2 ) reports Orient Police Chief Joe Brown is accused by the Franklin County sheriff's office of threatening people and brandishing a gun at two bars in Orient on Saturday night. He was arrested Monday at the sheriff's office.

According to authorities, the owner of one bar has also filed for an order of protection against Brown.

Orient Mayor Pete Witkewiz (wit-KAY'-wiz) said Brown has been suspended and that he has asked for his resignation. The mayor said he'd recommend next week the city council fire Brown if he doesn't step down.

A phone number for Brown could not be found.

Orient had 358 people as of the 2010 census.
