Netanyahu turns down invite to meet with Senate Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned down an invitation to meet with Senate Democrats next week when he travels to Washington to speak to Congress about Iran.

The Israeli leader said in a letter to Sens. Dick Durbin and Dianne Feinstein that accepting their invitation could compound the misperception of partisanship surrounding his visit.

Durbin of Illinois and Feinstein of California had invited Netanyahu to meet Democrats in a closed-door session. Democrats have been angered by the Republican invitation to Netanyahu to deliver a speech to a joint meeting of Congress, an invite extended without consulting the White House.

Netanyahu is scheduled to speak to Congress on Tuesday, March 3.
