AARP volunteers at Warren-Newport library help preparing income tax returns

The room was full as 12 volunteer tax preparers helped individuals complete their income tax returns Monday at Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee.

Volunteers with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide began helping low- and middle-income taxpayers Feb. 2 and will continue doing so until Apr. 13.

"We basically prepare taxes for anyone that comes in. There are no income limitations. We try to focus most of our attention on elderly and lower to middle income folks," said Tom Noller of Libertyville, the state coordinator for Northern Illinois for the AARP Tax-Aide program. "They love it. We have 10 sites in Lake County, two of them are walk-in sites. We have many other sites throughout county where you can make appointments."

At Warren-Newport Library, the tax aide group is available Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon, and help about 40 people a day. Last year, the one location prepared tax returns for almost 600 people.

"I think it's great. It is well served to our community. They do a really good job here. This is my second time coming," Veronica Williams of Zion said after walking out with a completed tax return.
